STUDY: Risks have been played down

HEALTH risks from mobile phone masts and wireless technology are being played down, experts say.

A review published yesterday concludes the electromagnetic impulses the masts transmit can affect the immune system and neurological functions.

This includes memory and sleep patterns, causing brain tumours, cancers and Alzheimer’s.

It says the radiation can have an impact on fertility and metabolism and can cause depression and fatigue.

And there is “little doubt” that exposure causes childhood leukemia, it adds.

Environmental consultant Cindy Sage, one of the authors of the Bioinitiative Review, said: “We think the risks have been downplayed.

“The trend in increasing reports of electrosensitivity is too big to overlook.”

Although the study contains no new science, it is hoped bringing all the evidence on emissions together will force governments to act.

legal battle erupts among cell providers

A HIGH COURT judge of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago has agreed to entertain further submissions from mobile telephone competitors, Digicel and Telecommunications Services of T&T (TSTT), before he rules on whether the Irish-owned company will be allowed wider access to TSTT’s database for evidence to substantiate its claims of call-blocking.

Justice Nolan Bereaux gave his decision yesterday, as he turned down an application by Digicel for a further order to be made to compel TSTT to disclose technical details of its network.

Digicel returned to court last week, complaining that TSTT failed to comply with the February 15, 2007, order which allowed Digicel’s engineers access to TSTT records, relating to alleged call-blocking, and ordered that this data be assessed by two agents

from the Telecommunications Authority (TATT) in the presence of TSTT and Digicel’s representatives.

TSTT has argued that the order was already complied with, and accused Digicel of trying to have the judge vary his original order.

Justice Bereaux agreed, but said he wanted to resolve the allegations of call-blocking, and ordered that further submissions be filed before he rules on December 12, on whether the data-collection exercise will be revisited.

Digicel has accused the local telecom services provider of blocking its customers’ calls to TSTT’s fixed-line and mobile networks, and was granted several injunctive reliefs in its lawsuit.

Alvin Fitzpatrick, SC, Terrence Bharrat and Andre Le Blanc appeared yesterday for Digicel, while Martin Daly, SC, Garvin Simmonette and Sashi Indarsingh represented TSTT.

ANGRY Curepe (North-Central-Trinidad) residents staged a Sunday afternoon placard demonstration to protest the erection of a cell tower between Bellesmythe and Mc Inroy Streets.

The residents claimed that unknown to them, a group of workmen entered the area and erected part of a cell tower a few weeks ago.

The cell tower erection is expected to be completed soon, but residents fear for their safety. They are putting things in place to ensure that the cell tower is removed.

Armed with their placards, the protestors made up of women, children and men, chanted, “we want no cell tower in Curepe.”

Mobile Phone giants endanger health of Citizens in Trinidad & Tobago

Telecommunication giants Digicel, BMOBILE and TSTT are together ignoring health and safety of the citizens of Trinidad & Tobago with irresponsible erection of mobile phone masts in residential and near /on academic facilities.

Concerted Opposition cannot be ignored...The current PNM Minister responsible for Planning and Development needs to immediately address this serious issue of STANDARDS.

What about Town and Country planning?

What about the local Government departments? What about transparency in Public Affairs?Where are the regulations?

Is it possible that individuals can accept financial reward and ignore the process of consultation of their neighbour's? Why should such unscrupulous activity be allowed to continue???.

In the absence of any response on this issue=appropriate Political action will have to be explored. In fact the political survival of the party is at stake. This blog is dedicated to this unresolved issue.

Electronic pollution

Electrical pollution, invisible, silent, odorless, tasteless, is the perfect pollutant, as we have not evolved any methods of sensing its presence. A few people, like me, have become "electrically sensitive" and are able to know when we are being exposed due to the symptoms that we experience. Most people, even when exposed to levels and wave lengths that are literally killing them, never notice a thing.

Although a growing number of people are apprehensive about living near a cell tower, very few people are yet aware we are being affected by health-damaging high frequencies broadcast from the wiring of our own homes. Not all of us are exposed to wireless sources, but virtually everyone in electrified countries is exposed 24/7 in our homes, schools and workplaces to electrical frequencies that are damaging our health.

Never the less the struggle to raise consciousness continues... So many thanks for to you our dedicated readers/researchers and partner organisations.

The German Federal Government recommends to avoid the employment of WLAN on the job or at home. In order to reduce the personal radiation dose, it is better to remain with conventional, cable-bound networks.

Last week, two schoolgirls [teens] were coming out of a school at Wolverstone near Ipswich in UK, during a thunderstorm. They were both using umbrellas with metal frames and were both struck by lightening. Only the fact that their shoes had rubber soles saved them from death.

One of them had her mobile phone in her hand, the lightening melted it causing it to stick to her hand and she is severely burned. She bit through her tongue and has had to have extensive surgery in her mouth.

Bavarian Government bans WLAN in schools

Bavarian Parliament recommends not to use WLAN

The Bavarian Parliament issued a recommendation to all schools in the Land
to not install wireless LAN networks.

The Committee for Education appealed to schools to use cabled networks.

This recommendation was based on evidence provided during a hearing in
Parliament with regard to mobile phone/wireless technology, which stated
that children should not be exposed to radiation form WLAN. Members of all
parties stressed that it was important to avoid potential damage in such an
early phase of life.

The final decision whether to install WLAN or not remains with the bearer of
the cost for such infrastructure {translator¹s note: the schools themselves}
in the Land.

DO NOTE:
The Federal Radiation Protection Agency had taken part in the parliamentary

Ordinary citizens the world over are up in arms against mobile giants of the telecommunication industry. It is a fascinating scenario as the quarrel surrounds a popular personal accessory: the Cellular/Mobile Phone.

The cry is: No to erection of Mobile Phone Masts in villages, residential areas, inner cities' tower blocks, near water towers, on steeples of churches, or academic institutions.

The question of whether churches are suitable sites for mobile phone masts took an interesting turn when The Chancellor of the Diocese of Chelmsford refused permission to put a mast in a church in Chingford on the grounds that it could be used to deliver "revolting and damaging pornographic" material.

There are reports of active disguised masts on places of worship across Europe raising a variety of grim problems. Among these are masts disguised as crucifixes and trees. One wonders about the true reason for the camouflage. It is also becoming common place in the UK as objection to masts becomes more prevalent.

Nevertheless many politicians both at local and national level have joined the struggle alongside citizens, environmentalists and scientists to protest the new danger: EMFs (Electronic Magnetic Fields) radiation.

EMFs

According to Dr. Robert O. Becker, Medical Doctor (two times Nobel prize nominee) and Author of "Cross Currents" and "The Body" :

"I have no doubt in my mind that at the present time that the greatest polluting element in the earth's environment is the proliferation of electromagnetic fields. I consider that to be far greater on a global scale than warming..."

At a recently convened annual meeting of the World Congress of Integrated Medicines, called "Electromagnetic Factors in Health: An Invisible Pandemic." One scientist commented: "It's bigger than mercury. It's bigger than Lyme disease. It's bigger than anything we've dealt with in medicine, yet physicians, some of whom are in the room, are not looking into this."

Discovery of EMFs emitted in homes owing to water being polluted by Mobile phone masts erected near or on Water Towers have revealed worrying concerns. Apart from polluting the water provision to community homes and work spaces it also surpasses legal levels of exposure considered safe for humans.

There is now an established relationship based on scientific research on the health of persons exposed to high levels of EMFs.

Findings include high risks of Neuro-Endocrine Stress syndrome (aka adrenal exhaustion), cardiovascular disease, recurring lymphoma cancer, blood sugar increase in diabetics, (REF: The Canadian Prof. Magda Havas has done extensive research on this :source

Melatonin excretion by humans (As Melatonin is a sleep, growth and mood regulating neurotransmitter and also a powerful antioxidant and cancer inhibitor so any messing with it's excretion is very dangerous) apart from impaired mental health.

According to Dr. Andrew Goldsworthy a noted Honorary Lecturer at the Imperial College in London in his paper: "The biological effects of Weak Electromagnetic Fields":

"There have been many instances of harmful effects of electromagnetic fields from such seemingly innocuous devices as mobile phones, computers, power lines and domestic wiring. They include an increased risk of cancer, loss of fertility and unpleasant physiological symptoms. The power and mobile phone companies, hoping to avoid litigation, often assert that because the energy of the fields is too low to give significant heating, they cannot have biological effect. However the evidence that electromagnetic fields can have "non-thermal" biological effects is now overwhelming…."

Recent disclosure of a scandalous shelving of pertinent commissioned research has raised serious questions. One such 2000 study conducted by the ECOLOG Institute under the leadership of distinguished German scientist Dr Peter Neitzke concluded even after several revisions:

"Electromagnetic fields with frequencies in the mobile telecommunications range play a role in the development of cancer. This is particularly notable for tumours of the central nervous system."

Another stunning revelation is the impact this industry is having on the ecological balance of our planet. With innumerable scientific reports suggesting devastating effects on grazing livestock, pigeons, bees and agriculture being parried by a furore of concerted denial by the industry together with the mandated regulatory agencies. Scientists at the Research Institute for Nature and Forests in Brussels in Belgium, have produced the first evidence that mobile phone base stations are affecting the reproductive behaviour of wild sparrows

In fact Individual Local Councils in the UK have since responded by refusing permission for the erection of Mobile phone masts to protect Bee colonies.

Colony Collapse Syndrome

Widespread reports on Colony Collapse Syndrome (CCS) in North America and now Europe are proving problematic and disturbing to say the least. It is contended that not only radiation emitted from Phone masts but also from mobile phones are responsible for this disaster. Dr. George Carlo a trained epidemiologist has pointed out that the spread of the Bee collapse does not resemble a disease spread pattern like that of SARS. CCS has just exploded on 4 continents in no time so there has to be a common disease promoter present in all those places. Mobile phones and masts meet the criteria and the radiation has reached breaking point for bees.

WIFI Technology

According to the UK Health Protection Agency:

WiFi is short for Wireless Fidelity and is a particular type of wireless local area network (WLAN) - i.e., you don't need to plug your computer into a phone network via a cable. There are many types of WLAN but all of them allow two or more computers to form a network using radio frequency (RF) signals. They allow users to access and share data, applications, internet access or other network resources in the same way as wired (cable) systems.

Without necessary vital research, truly no one knows the real risks of Wi-Fi

As hotspots are popping up everywhere for internet users with even entire cities going WIFI , now a professor at Bristol University, UK has called for an inquiry into the dangers of WI-FI wireless internet technology.

Recent widely reported rejection of WIFI technology by a school in the UK became a catalyst in the ongoing debate for much needed research on the implication of its use.

Dr. Gerd Oberfeld in Salzburg, Austria has secured the worlds lowest exposure levels for base stations. Other countries with low guidelines (much lower than UK) includes Italy, Switzerland and Russia.

Even PANORAMA a BBC Television documentary series investigated and exposed for viewers the inconsistencies and mounting evidence of dangers poised by this technology.

Needless to say, Institutions and other European governments have taken drastic steps to disallow the use of such technology in light of the damning evidence. Perhaps such growing concerns have even influenced the chairman of the UK's Health Protection Agency to call for an official investigation. However theses concerns remain ignored as feeble calls for investigation and suggestions of further epidemiological studies only stall the momentum of the debate.

Electronic sensitivity

There are varying degrees of sensitivity, and those only mildly affected will not necessarily be aware of the cause and not have any disruption to daily life.

For example one such chronic victim of this condition reports:

"For the past seven years, I have been electrosensitive, which means I react to the electromagnetic radiation - sometimes known as electrosmog - given off by electricity systems and appliances. Five minutes near a mobile phone mast is enough to cause sharp pains in my head. Longer exposure produces aching muscles, heart palpitations and stomach cramps. On occasion, it has caused me to bleed internally."

Medical practitioners in Switzerland have had lower reports of this condition as there are astringent laws governing exposure. However some medical practitioners in the UK are reporting a worrying rise in such reports of this new condition.

Individual victims have resorted to unconventional methods of protection against this syndrome. One such suffer has actually been on UK National television promoting her protective form of clothing to combat symptoms of this condition caused by electronic smog.

Nevertheless the denial remains unabated from a besieged industry.

Health Concerns

Damning evidence of diagnosed clusters of varied ailments suffered by persons resident near mobile masts are being reported. An observational study of the effect of mobile/cell phone usage on semen analysis in men attending infertility clinic was conducted in Ohio USA in 2007.The Reproductive Research Center, Glickman Urological Institute and Department of Obstetrics-Gynecology have published their conclusions.

The research of three hundred sixty-one men revealed that use of cell phones decrease the semen quality in men by decreasing the sperm count, motility, viability, and normal morphology. The decrease in sperm parameters was dependent on the duration of daily exposure to cell phones and independent of the initial semen quality.

MORE EVIDENCE as ACTION ESCALATES

Meanwhile numerous steps have been taken by governments across Europe and parts of Asia in response to these reports to regulate with improvised legislations for the erection of these masts. Nevertheless phone companies have not letup in their applications to erect these masts in contested locations.

Noted scientist Dr George Carlos lead the US Senate commissioned WTR cellphone & health research programme in the 90's where they found DNA damage & blood-brain-barrier leakage. Dr. Carlo went public when the industry tried to shut down the programme and bury the evidence. In fact he visited the UK early 2007 and addressed concerned MPs and citizens at the House of Commons as part of the campaign to raise awareness of the dangers posed by this industry.

Quite recently there was also a stunning revelation of a leading mobile phone corporation unsuccessfully attempting to cover up one such scientific report suggesting possible harm by mobile phone use to humans. This was widely reported in the press causing collateral damage to the testimonies of refutation by the industry.

Scientist & Activist Dr. Iris Atzmon is the author of the pioneering work: The Cellular, Not What You Thought! The Information that is Hidden from the Public". For the May 2007 issue of the Israel based periodical: Alternative Life, she commented the following :

" People hold the phone near their ear. We have never put a device so close to the brain without knowing what it is really capable to do. It is not an innocent device.

Experiments show that the radiation from the mobile phone changes the brain waves, the brain waves play a role in control of the body functions, the meaning is that people allow to interfere with their brain functions, especially small children.

Apart from that, there are symptoms that people feel: headaches, heat in the ear, ringings, nose bleedings, loss of concentration, dizziness and sleep problems because the radiation interferes with melatonin production which is the hormone of sleep.

I ask myself, how many people get drug prescriptions against depression and headaches when these are actually symptoms that are derived from the radiation, and they are missed in the diagnosis. Physicians don't study on environmental pollution or radiation. There is a terrible disconnection between medicine and environment."

"There are studies that point to damage in the blood brain barrier. The radiation causes changes in the protein of the barrier and causes penetration of substances that shouldn't be in the brain, meaning the radiation damages the protection barrier of the brain and people become more vulnerable to other factors like air pollution and smoking. It is important to stress: the opening of the blood brain barrier happens within 2 minutes, so short exposure is enough!

"In studies it was also found that the radiation causes production of free radicals, which is a carcinogenic factor. The body has anti-oxidants protection system, but if the body is exposed chronically to free radicals, it needs to 'waste' the protection system on the fight against environmental exposures.

"And finally, there are studies that point to long term risks, like brain tumors and benign tumors of the acoustic nerve. Benign tumors have potential to become malignant, and until then the tumor damage the hearing and causes suffering and pains. There is also evidence for DNA breakage, meaning potential for genetic damage and damage that is going to affect on the heredity. "

Meanwhile there is another danger lurking in our homes: Digital Electronic Cordless Telephones. These have been found to be as dangerous as Mobile/Cell phone Masts as they emit the same type of pulsed microwave radiation (about 1.8 GHz) as ordinary (GSM) mobile phones.

Emissions can be about 6 V/m within a metre of the base unit, for as long as it is plugged in. These base stations emit their radiation even when the phone is not in use. All DECT base units emit microwaves continuously 24 hours a day as long as they are plugged in. For this reason cordless phones are regarded as bad news.

In fact a DECT phone is a mobile phone, and its base is a mobile phone mast in your house or office. So if you must use one. Keep the base unit and remote extra handsets away from where you sit or sleep, and remember that you are transmitting into neighbouring property through your walls.

Unlike mobile phones, DECT cordless phones work at a fixed power. Mobiles turn their power down to the lowest level possible, so when you are near a base station this can be much lower than a DECT cordless. DECT pulses are far more aggressive than for mobiles.

Campaigners fighting phone mast applications today called for all new proposals to be put on hold after a scientific study found they caused cancer.

Telecoms company T-Mobile employed German scientist Dr Peter Neitzke to research potential health risks caused by the equipment but then ignored his findings, preferring to use reports from different experts who said masts pose no significant threat.

Dr Neitzke said once T-Mobile realised the likely outcome of his study it commissioned further research from other scientists which would contradict his work.

T-Mobile, which has about 17 million UK customers, was today condemned by campaigners and its actions were branded an attempt by the industry to keep discussion of potential health risks off the agenda.

Andy Street, who has been campaigning against applications for mobile phone masts near schools and homes in Norwich, said: “These findings should have been published immediately rather than being brushed under the carpet.

“We always thought masts were a risk to health and that the companies knew more about the dangers than they were letting on. For a phone company to ignore its own findings is irresponsible. I want the city council to ban phone mast applications until this report has been fully published and is available to planners.”

His comments were backed by Norwich North MP Ian Gibson, who said: “The council putting a stop on allowing any more mast applications sounds like a very sensible, precautionary measure.

“I think it's better to err on the side of caution.”

The Evening News is fighting the installation of mobile phone masts near homes and schools until they are proven safe through our Put Masts on Hold campaign.

In January 2005, Sir William Stewart, chairman of the National Radiological Protection Board, published a report calling for a precautionary approach to masts near homes and schools. An Evening News investigation that month revealed one in five primary schools in Norwich was within the threshold experts claim could put children at risk.

We also told how a cluster of cancer victims had been living in the shadow of a mobile phone mast in St William's Way, Thorpe St Andrew. At least six people there developed tumours.

Campaigner and city councillor Bert Bremner, who is fighting the eighth application for a mast in the University ward area in four years, said: “It's like tobacco companies hiding the dangers of tobacco. Everything comes out eventually.”

Graham Barker, from Lloyd Road, Taverham, has campaigned against masts for several years. He said: “The whole point of the Evening News campaign was to put masts on hold until we knew the dangers. Now there is credible evidence there are risks.”

Norwich City Council has called on the government to issue new guidelines to planning officers. Council leader Steve Morphew said: “At present planners are not allowed to take account of health concerns, so until the law changes there's not much else we can do.”

David Bradford, chairman of the council's planning committee, added: “We would be interested in seeing this report, which should be made widely available.”

The report was carried out by the Ecolog Institute, which has been researching mobile phone technology since 1992 and was paid by T-Mobile.

Dr Neitzke was working on the study, which was drawn up in 2000 and updated three years later. It was unknown in the UK until it was passed on by European campaigners to the Human Ecological Social Economic Project (HESE) last week. The report stated: “Electromagnetic fields with frequencies in the mobile telecommunications range play a role in the development of cancer. This is particularly notable for tumours of the central nervous system.”

A Department of Health spokesman said: “There is no hard evidence that the health of the public is being affected by the use of mobile phone technologies. Our advice remains the same. We continue to advise a precautionary approach to mobile phone use by under-16s.”

A T-Mobile spokesman said: “It was the aim of T-Mobile to engage four different institutes with the same questions to guarantee an independent and objective discussion.”

Mike Dolan, executive director of the Mobile Operators' Association, said: “The review confirmed that while some scientists had differing views, overall, 'the scientific studies examined in the risk dialogue do not support suspicions that mobile telephony has harmful effects on health'.”

Mobile phone threat to bees:

Mobile phones have wiped out millions of bees, scientists have warned. The phone signals are thought to upset their navigation and they die of exposure after losing their sense of direction.

Up to 90pc of bees have been killed in some areas. But, bizarrely, few dead bodies have been left behind. Instead, the insects vanish.

The phenomenon - Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) - has spread to Europe after appearing in the US last year, where the commercial bee population has declined by about two-thirds. A study by a German researcher found bees refuse to return to their hives if nearby mobiles are left on.

In Britain, CCD has been noticed only in London and the South East. Bee-keeper John Chapple reports that 23 of his 40 hives in the London area have been deserted. With bees thought to contribute £1bn to the UK economy - mainly by pollinating plants - the Government's Bee Unit is investigating.

One of Ireland's most successful authors has become involved in her own local drama, playing a concerned citizen against a phalanx of mobile phone companies. Maeve Binchy has objected to a mobile phone mast being erected beside her home in Dalkey [south Dublin coastal village], arguing that it could be a health hazard. Binchy, 66, said the mast at Dalkey garda station was only two doors away from the house she shares with her husband, Gordon Snell, and would overlook her terrace.

The author of Tara Road and Circle of Friends says her opposition to the mast isn't merely a case of nimbyism [not in my back yard]. "I have a mobile phone and I'm not completely hostile to them, but we do not know of the possible health hazards involved with the masts," she said. "More research is needed." Binchy is also concerned the mast will be near several schools.

There is already a telecommunications mast attached to the garda station, but the new structure, which will provide 3G reception for all four Irish mobile phone companies, will be significantly taller and bulkier: a 30 metre-high structure with antennae and equipment cabins, according to Vilicom's plans. Binchy could be about to do for Ireland what Jasper Carrott has done for Britain: the comedian has become an unlikely figurehead for the anti-mast lobby after discovering one near his home in Birmingham.

Carrott recently met anti-mast activists in Ireland and attended a lecture in Dublin by Dr George Carlo, chairman of the Science and Public Policy Institute in Washington. Carlo, a former mobile phone company employee-turned-opponent, believes children should not be allowed to use mobiles because they could damage growing cells. Binchy has no plans to take up the cudgels on behalf of other communities , confining herself to sorting out her own backyard. The novelist wrote to her local council last month to highlight her concerns, arguing that a decision on the mast should be deferred "until all the safety issues have been ironed out." Snell wrote a separate letter, objecting strongly to "the potential health risks of the structure, which have yet to be thoroughly evaluated." He said the siting of the mast in the centre of the coastal village could damage its reputation as a heritage area.

Objections were lodged by 13 others, and a lobby group, Dalkey Community Against Radiation, has been set up. Oliver McCabe, a spokesman, said: "The mast will be within 10 metres of three houses and close to six schools, in contravention of a motion tabled in the council calling for masts to be at least 600 metres from the nearest school." A report from an expert group appointed by the Department of Communications has concluded "there are no adverse short or long-term health effects from exposure to the radio frequency (RF) signals produced by mobile phones and base station transmitters". The report, to be published this week, is also expected to find that RF signals have not been found to cause cancer.

Tommy McCabe, director or the Irish Cellular Industry Association, said: "Irish mobile operators comply with all emissions guidelines and these are monitored constantly by ComReg. 3G masts emit less power than 2G masts and generate only the same power as a light bulb." McCabe said the distance from a mast to a house or school bore no relevance to safety. There are now 6,000 masts in Ireland, more than 400 of which were erected last year. Con Colbert, of the Irish Doctors' Environmental Association, disputes the findings of the government report, saying other scientists had established a link between the radiation emitted by mobile phones and adverse health effects.

John Cummins, of Better Environmental and Safer Telecommunications (Best), a lobby group, said: "The latest government report is biased because raising questions about the safety of mobile phones in Ireland at this stage could damage the economy. We're in a similar situation now with mobile phones as we were with smoking and asbestos in the 1960s and 1970s." Pat O'Donovan, a Limerick-based auctioneer and member of Best, said: "You only have to look at how masts affect property prices to show that people aren't convinced by the industry's arguments."

The Department of the Environment encourage mobile phone companies to group together to share sites, minimising the number of structures, but it is up to councils to decide how near they can be sited to houses and schools. Public buildings charge mobile phone companies to locate masts in their grounds.

Compensation for phone mast blunder

Families living near a mobile phone mast have been awarded £117,000 in compensation.

Seven families will get between £10,000 and £20,000 depending on their proximity to the 20ft telecoms mast in Swindon.

Swindon Borough Council was ordered to pay the compensation after its planners failed to object to the One2One mast within the necessary 28 days due to an administration error.

The award is thought to the first of its kind.

Local Government Ombudsman Jerry White found the council guilty of maladministration causing injustice and has ordered the payment of compensation for the loss in value of the homes affected.

But most families said they would much rather the mast was removed.

A spokeswoman said Swindon Borough Council had apologised to the families for the error - which was caused by the application being put on the wrong pile of paperwork.

This delay meant One2One - now named T-mobile - could put the mast up even though planners had objected.

Council chief executive Simon Birch said: "The council has accepted the ombudsman's findings in full and has offered affected householders compensation.

"The council has introduced new procedures for dealing with future applications for telecommunications development to prevent this maladministration happening again."

HUNDREDS of persons, from the very young to the elderly, living in and around cell-towers are unknowingly living with death as both local and international medical research indicate radiation from these towers may cause major diseases, sometimes with fatal consequences.

This was the view expressed by several professors, researchers and public health scientists during a health symposium yesterday at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Faculty of Medical Sciences, Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC) in Mt Hope.

The symposium entitled “Cell Tower Radiation: Is it safe?” saw a disappointing turnout especially since the health concern surrounding cell-towers was raised locally and internationally within recent time.

Members of the panel found that brain tumours, memory loss, a reduced sperm count and leukaemia were some of the effects caused by constant exposure to cell-tower radiation.

Noticeably absent from yesterday’s symposium were representatives of the country’s two cellular providers — TSTT and Digicel. The absence was noted by symposium chairman Keith Clifford.

Peter Permell, vice-president of the Association for Radio Frequency (RF) Emission and Control in TT (ArFECTT), told the audience that cell-tower radiation is one of the most important environmental concerns today.

According to Permell, ArFECTT undertook its own research into RF emissions because the group “is deeply concerned about the public’s safety.” The association, he said, also found that the symptoms subside when people leave the surrounding area where these towers are located.

Cell-towers are erected in or around densely populated areas to ensure the viability of radio frequencies on which cellular phones operate.

It was added that the towers should not be placed closer than 300 metres to where people live.

Professor Stephan Gift, of UWI’s Faculty of Engineering, told the sparse audience that his findings showed radiation caused alteration in brain waves, a two-fold increase in child leukaemia and changes in the human immune system.

He also sourced information from a “Reflex Study” done by 12 groups in seven European countries. Findings showed that radiation caused DNA breaks in exposed cells of the human body.

Gift said it was also found that in Germany, this year, there was a seven fold increase in breast cancer in an area with cell towers. He also said that 900 cell towers were demolished in Taiwan in 2005 after these health concerns were raised.

Throughout the local cell tower issue, TSTT has maintained it ensures its radio frequency emissions from cell-towers were as much as a thousand times lower than the recommended levels of the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP).

However, Gift suggested that the Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (TATT) reject the ICNIRP as have China, Russia and Sweden and move to a better standard when dealing with the health ramifications of these towers.

Gift said that the headaches people experience with prolonged cellular phone usage are because, “things leak into the brain, which shouldn’t.” Contacted yesterday for comment, TATT executive chairman John Prince said two members were present at the symposium as they would today brief him on what the medical experts said at the symposium.

“We have not had all of the information (regarding the amount of cell-towers in TT)...the companies (TSTT and Digicel) are supposed to lodge with us,” Prince said.

When contacted by Newsday, TSTT Communications Manager Amoy Van Lowe assured that TSTT maintains cell-tower emissions significantly lower than international standards. She added that instead of criticising the company, Gift should, “lobby to have the standards re-assessed.”

The symposium also included a recording from George Carlo, a Public Health Scientist at the Science and Public Policy Institute in the United States on his findings regarding cell-tower radiation emissions.

He said over a period of five and a half years, severe effects from cellular phone usage were discovered. Carlo found that radiation from cellular phones opened up the blood-brain barrier that normally protects brain tissues from toxic chemicals circulating in the blood and also caused a disruption in DNA repair.

However, Jonas Addae, a professor at UWI’s Faculty of Medical Sciences, disputed the panel’s findings saying that in 2000, the World Health Organisation (WHO) indicated that “radioactive frequencies emitted by mobile phones and base stations are unlikely to induce or promote cancer.”

In July, Planning and Development Minister Camille Robinson-Regis indicated that Government, with the help of the Army, was going to tear down 16 TSTT and Digicel cell-towers which reportedly failed to comply with existing planning policy. So far, only one cell-tower has in fact been torn down.

Attempts to contact both Robinson-Regis and Public Utilities and the Environment Minister Pennelope Beckles, for comment proved futile.
